Our Vision
Our vision is the creation of an atmosphere at Berklee that promotes and
encourages the acknowledgement and discussion of past injustices and current
divisions because of race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation and class.
We aim to create a new language to communicate among difference so as to
create an atmosphere that is inclusive, respectful and communal.
Through peaceful, performance art and musical performances we hope to make
people more aware of the commonalities we all share and the power we
collectively hold to change not only Berklee but also the world.
Berklee’s History
Berklee was founded in an era of open racial and gender oppression teaching a
musical form that was “founded on jazz and popular music rooted in the African
Cultural Diaspora”.
Contemporary Berklee has acknowledged these past injustices and made
positive steps toward moving the school forward in a way that provides support
for Berklee’s diverse community.
We feel it is important for students to understand Berklee’s history and the music
and culture that helped to shape its reputation. Our hope is that this knowledge
will encourage students to seek ways of collaborating and communicating across
differences to make art and music that break down artificial barriers of our shared
values and humanity.
